LIZ M

Liz (lizincinti) is a moderator for all three ABC soaps on the Soap Central message board forums and does weekly recaps. She loves all soaps but her heart belongs to ABC. Her earliest memories are of watching General Hospital with her mother back in the days of Luke and Laura. This is Liz's seventh go-round as an Emmy prognosticator -- and she's back this year to see if she can up her total of correct picks.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

One Life to Live

I have to say that I'm so disappointed that General Hospital didn't submit the episode of Edward Quartermaine's memorial service when Edward's spirit led his family one last time with a traditional Thanksgiving song and then ascended into heaven with his beloved Lila, who had passed away years earlier. Then again, the writers who penned that episode also wrote the two episodes of the show that I think will take home the Emmy this year for Outstanding Drama Series. One Life to Life not only went out with a bang, but they added a shocking and unexpected cliffhanger that kept fans chatting until OLTL.2 returned to life on the Internet earlier this year.

Who will win: One Life to Live

Jason Thompson

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR
Jason Thompson
Patrick Drake

Admittedly, I'm partial to General Hospital, but Jason Thompson's poignant scenes as Patrick Drake trying to muster up the strength to attend his wife's memorial service were perfect. I really felt Patrick's pain and grief over losing Robin and recall thinking during those scenes that he should submit them as his Emmy reel. I'm thrilled that he did, and I hope he takes home the Emmy because I think that it's well deserved.

Who will win: Jason Thompson (Patrick Drake, GH)

Susan Flannery

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS
Susan Flannery
Stephanie Forrester

Susan Flannery's exit was beautifully written from start to finish, and I loved the soapy twist of her dying in the arms of her frenemy. It was heartbreaking to watch, even for someone like me who has only seen few episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful.

Who will win: Susan Flannery (Stephanie Forrester, B&B)

Billy J. Miller

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR
Billy J. Miller
Billy Abbott

I like several actors in this category because I've seen their work on other soaps, so it was fascinating to watch them portray different characters. These are all talented men, but my favorite performance was by Billy Miller because I found his storyline to be the most interesting.

Who will win: Billy J. Miller (Billy Abbott, Y&R)

Melissa Claire Egan

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Melissa Claire Egan
Chelsea Lawson

I was a little torn with this category because there were two performances that I liked. Katherine Kelly Lang's performance as Brooke Logan was touching, but I think Melissa Claire Egan's scenes as Chelsea Newman were a little more rounded. Melissa went through a gamut of emotions as she reeled from her husband's stunning secret, which had the potential to shatter their lives.

Who will win: Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea Lawson, Y&R)

Chandler Massey

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTOR
Chandler Massey
Will Horton

There were some really good contenders this year for this category, but the one that I liked the most was Chandler Massey's performance as Will Horton, a young man who was struggling with his sexual identity after an unexpected kiss with another man.

Who will win: Chandler Massey (Will Horton, DAYS)

Kristen Alderson

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTRESS
Kristen Alderson
Starr Manning

I'm not a fan of Lindsey Morgan and have no idea why she is a nominee because her overall work on GH was wooden. It was clear from the beginning that she was in over her head. Sadly, she saved the best for last, but it's not enough for me to pick her. I think the young lady who takes home the Emmy this year is going to be Kristen Alderson. She really showed us Starr's sorrow and anger over losing not just her child, but her fiancé as well.

Who will win: Kristen Alderson (Starr Manning, GH)

OUTSTANDING WRITING IN A DRAMA SERIES
One Life to Live

In an interesting twist, we had a couple of characters appear on two different shows this year, thanks to several characters from One Life to Live crossing over to General Hospital. I confess that I was not a fan of the pathogen storyline on General Hospital. The only true stand-out scene during the pathogen storyline was when a frail Edward Quartermaine refused to take the last of a life-saving serum, so a little girl could live. I was far more invested in the art imitating life storyline playing out on One Life to Live as the citizens of Llanview gathered to say goodbye to a beloved soap opera called Fraternity Row.

Who will win: One Life to Live

OUTSTANDING DIRECTING IN A DRAMA SERIES
The Young and the Restless

If your episode makes it on The Soup for Joel McHale to poke fun at then perhaps you should rethink submitting it as an Emmy contender. Such was the case with General Hospital's pathogen episode. I think that there were better episodes that GH could have selected to showcase the directing team's talent. The one that I liked the most was The Young and the Restless. It was gripping, suspenseful, and packed with great performances.
